Why Shortlist exists
Modern dating gave us more access, more choice, and more technology than ever before. So why does it feel harder, more exhausting, and less human?
Something changed.
Dating apps made meeting people easier than ever. But somewhere along the way, dating also became more overwhelming, more performative, more disposable, and more emotionally exhausting.
People now sort through hundreds of profiles, endless conversations, and infinite options — often without feeling any closer to real connection.
More matches. Less meaning.
The issue isn't technology. It's incentives.
Most dating platforms are optimized for engagement: more swiping, more notifications, more attention, more time spent inside the app.
But human relationships don't necessarily improve when people feel distracted, overwhelmed, or endlessly replaceable.
We think thoughtful people are looking for something different.
Not necessarily a soulmate. Not necessarily marriage tomorrow. Just a dating experience that feels calmer, more intentional, more respectful, more human.
A place where effort still matters.
Where communication matters.
Where people treat each other like people — not content.

So we started asking a different question.
What if dating worked better with fewer matches, less noise, better norms, more accountability, more focus?
Not by going backward — but by designing a healthier environment from the beginning.
Better relationships start with better culture.
Shortlist is built around a simple idea: the people shape the platform.
Shortlist is an experiment.
We don't think algorithms alone solve dating. But we do think environments matter.
Shortlist is an attempt to create a calmer, more intentional dating experience — designed around thoughtful people instead of endless swiping.
Maybe modern dating doesn't need more features.
Maybe it needs better norms.
The people make the platform.
